COVID-19 has affected us too.

But it does not define us.

At John Knox, we have established a set of values that have helped us shape our response to this time.

We value God's design of the church during this time.

You are the body of Christ. Each one of you is a part of it. (1Cor. 12:27)

The church is not a building, it is a body. We are connected when we gather, including through remote technology. Our staff, Session, and leadership are creatively and intentionally working to give us ways to connect with God and with one another throughout every week. We are grateful that God gives us one another during this time and is present amongst us.

We are together in this, no one left behind!

So speak encouraging words to one another. Build up hope so you’ll all be together in this, no one left out, no one left behind. I know you’re already doing this; just keep on doing it. (1 Thess. 5:11)

When we open our building for gathered worship or meetings, hybrid options are a priority. Many may not feel comfortable gathering in-person, and therefore, we will prioritize a worship experience that allows for both in-person and digital worship and gatherings.  When we are open, it is in a manner that includes as many people as possible so that we aren’t the cause of further isolation.

In love, we value the spiritual health and physical safety of our church family and staff.

Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. (Col. 3:12)

We have people of all ages, risk levels, and comfort levels that are important parts of our community. Decisions will be made in concert with advice from state government and medical authorities. Our staff team and Session will be creating policies and protocols that will protect congregants (e.g., masks, capacities and social distancing) all in step with our value of keeping people safe.

We value the Holy Spirit's guidance in our decision making, prioritizing care for our congregation and personal responsibility.

"Everything is lawful," but not everything is beneficial. "Everything is lawful," but not everything builds others up.”  (1 Cor. 10:23)

In making decisions, we will utilize information and guidance from our public officials so that we can determine the best next steps for our community. The church is an essential service and will never be closed officially. Our choice to re-open or close our close the building will depend upon the priority of your safety and prayerful guidance from the Spirit.
